Relational Aesthetics

Definition:
(as defined by French curator Nicholas Bourriaud) a set of artistic practices which take as their theoretical and practical point of departure the whole of human relations and their social context, rather than an independent and private space.

As Bourriaud’s champion of “Relational Aesthetics”, artist Liam Gillick, said it best when he stated that he needed people to complete his artworks, otherwise its just ‘stuff in a room.’

Felix Gonzalez-Torres was most well known for his (mostly untitled) installations in which he placed large piles of wrapped candies in the corners of galleries and invited visitors to take them.

Book Application:

I cut out the face from the mask so they could become separate entities. Now people can pic up the book, lift the mask from the face and place it their own face.
